Using statements of positive intent to change your brain (and your life)

What we focus on grows, so it’s without a doubt, both important and beneficial to place our attention consciously on our life and business.

To quote the fabulous Mike Dooley, our ‘thoughts become things’, so we’d do well to make them good ones.

If using affirmations feels a bit self help-y for your liking, or you’ve tried using them before and chanting at yourself in a mirror each morning hasn’t changed a thing, hear me out.

Our success depends on what’s happening between our ears and most of said happenings are unconscious. The first step to changing anything in your world is to start paying attention to what’s going on in your head and to get control of your monkey mind.

You can only change things you’re aware of.

I invite you to take stock of what’s happening in your life right now. What are your dominant thoughts? How has your current thinking created the reality you’re living? If you’re stuck in a cycle of negative self talk, you can change it.

What would you like to experience instead?

By selecting the statements you give your brain rather than being at the mercy of it doing its own thing, you’ll start to feel better. When you feel better and have a positive frame of mind, you’re far more likely to take positive and proactive action to create the life you want.

Affirmations are most useful when they are created in line with your goals and the action you’re already taking to move forwards them. Think of them as a power boost for your very capable unconscious mind.

Use them often enough and you’ll rewire your brain for the possibility of bigger and better things.

Here’s how to create affirmations:

  • Make them short and snappy
  • Use I statements such as I am, I have, I create, I enjoy, I love etc
  • Keep them present tense
  • Use positive phrasing rather than ‘I don’t want to be broke’, try ‘I have plenty of money’
  • Infuse them with emotion

If affirmations haven’t worked for you in the past, it might be because you’ve created statements that are so left of field that your brain refused to entertain them. If you’ve got £5 in your bank account and you’re busy chanting ‘I’m a bajillionaire’ there’s a slight incongruence. Something that’s a bit more believable such as ‘I know exactly how to earn more money’ would be a better starting point.

You can gradually increase the aspiration level of your affirmations as your brain gets on board and you see the external results of your positive mindset work.

Here are some of my favourite affirmations:

  • I am enough
  • I am a money magnet
  • I love working with amazing clients
  • I am happy and healthy and loved
  • My life gets better and better each day
  • I love making a difference

Print them up and keep them where you can see them, say them to yourself in the mirror when you’re getting ready in the morning, or write them down in your journal, whatever works best for you. Like everything in life, you’ll see the most benefit from the affirmations you create when you use them consistently.

Let me know how you get on.
